Rectify Error E18 In Canon Camera

The error E18 in Canon digital camera mainly occurs when something prevents the zoom lens of camera from properly extending or retracting. The error makes users really frustrated as it does not allow users to access the data stored in the camera memory.

The E18 Error or also called Canon lens error may appear due to any of the following reasons:

  • Opening lens while the camera is active and while in a confined space or being blocked
  • Extracted lens becoming jarred
  • Low camera battery as the unit turns on and off
  • Camera dropped accidentally
  • Some other issues like dust or dirt enter into the camera
  • Usual jarring of the camera
  • General malfunction issue of the camera

Another important reason could be that, there is a feature called bellows claw in the lens of Canon camera, which is a gear that physically extends and retracts the lens. The barrier plate, a piece that holds the lens is not too large and sometimes causes the bellows claw to malfunction, and thus result in struck lens. This leads to a black screen in the Canon camera only containing the Error E18.

Fortunately, the error can be easily fixed without even opening the camera. However, sometimes the method also leads to other damaged in the camera if done excessively.

The following steps will help:

  • At first be sure that the camera has all new batteries and it is in recording mode
  • Take out batteries from camera and after few minutes put them again in and turn on the camera
  • Use a fine tip blow off gun and dry compressed air (20 lbs) set the tip between lens turret and camera body and turn on air while moving the tip around the lens. It will clean all the dust and then turn on the camera.
  • Or use a hard surface to tap cover part of padded USB, such as desk.
  • Place camera on its back and from inside look at lens, if it looks crooked then power on camera and apply pressure to center the lens
  • If the lens does not extend or extends and then again retracts, then turn off camera and move around one part of lens. Do same with the other sections of the camera lens. Now fix it again and power on the camera.
  • Another fix is to pull and twist the biggest ring of lens while the camera is turned on

However, if the lens is broken or does not seems to get fixed, and if anyhow user cannot recover the data from the camera memory then user can use a professional image recovery software to easily and safely recover all the lost data in the Canon camera. The tool is very helpful in recovering data in case of lost, formatting or deletion.
